PowerPoker Review

PowerPoker has been known for a few years as the online poker room where Ilari Sahamies hangs out. The poker room is a relatively new one, which got off to a flying start when the Finn pro – then playing at Full Tilt – threw his endorsement behind it. PowerPoker is a Cake Network member, but due to the extreme customization of the interface it uses, it has a different feel from other Cake rooms.

PowerPoker used to accept US players, but it no longer does. The Black Friday events have prompted the site to withdraw completely from the US market.

Software-wise, PowerPoker stands out from among the other Cake network members in several ways. The installation file is 12 MB big, which should only take a few seconds to download over a decent connection. Even during installation, it becomes obvious that this software is slicker than the other Cake creations. The graphics look great, and whoever did the customizing deserves mad props for his efforts.

Stability isn’t an issue, neither during cash games nor during tournaments. The only downside is the options panel which tends to be a little messy, but other than that, the functionality is great too.

Player traffic is decent, although it did take quite a hit after US players were barred from the site. There are around 9,000 players at the tables in peak hours, which is quite an outstanding achievement for such a young online poker operation. Most of the action is focused on the lower stakes, although interestingly enough, some pretty hot $300/$600 NL Holdem battles take place at the site very week.

Tournaments-wise, PowerPoker is a pretty attractive proposition. Tournaments fill up fast, with little apparent regard to prize-pool and buy-in sizes. There are special Gold Chip tournaments too which give players a chance to spend their loyalty points. All-in-all, PowerPoker’s tournament offer is much better than that of most similarly sized online poker rooms.
